Word numbering

Carol

I want page numbers in the header to alternate left and
right corner, so that the document will read like a book
with the page numbers always at the outside edge of the
page. I can't figure out how to do this. Any suggestions?

There are two ways, the easy way and the better way:

1. The easy way: Using Insert | Page Numbers, select Outside for the
alignment. This is fine for very simple documents in which you need only a
page number (no other header/footer text) and won't be getting involved with
a lot of sections.

2. The better way: On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for
"Different odd and even." This gives you a separate Odd Page Header and Even
Page Header, which you can set up differently. See
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/HeaderFooter.htm for tips on setting up
headers and footers. This method is more suitable for real books, especially
if you are going to have multiple sections with running heads that include
page numbers.
