Word (Office 2000) locks up after upgrading to XP Pro

I just upgrade a Dell Dimension 4100 that was running W98SE to XP Pro. Now, when I quit Word (Office 2000), I get an error message stating

“Microsoft Windows has encountered a problem and needs to closeâ€

The linked error report states

“signature erro
Appname: winword.ex
Appver: 9.0.0.382
Modname: unknow
Modver: 0.0.0.
Offset: 000000â€

I have unchecked the compatibility boxes for Winword.exe and have renamed the normal.dot files. Neither solution has fixed the problem

Can anyone help me get rid of the error
