Word opening slowly

Jon

Word documents (and Excel spreadsheets) are taking 30
seconds to open. Started happening suddenly. In Safe
Mode they open fine. I have experimented with disabling
all Startup Items and none of them seems to be causing
it. I also have disabled virus checking and my firewall,
but the problem remains. All other programs working
fine. Any ideas as to what is causing the problem?

If ytou unlug from the netork does Word open normally. I
have done this and it works great. Except I do not have
an answer for why it works. I will post when I find a
resolution

Have you disabled the Office Plug-in under Norton Anti Virus.

I have heard that a new update from Symantec is causing
slower responses from MS Word...update released early AM
on 1/8/04. I've got about 15 companies calling about
this. I'm going to try disabling the Office Plug in at
one place, see what happens

I've found at least 4 other systems with the same
problem. All related to the Norton Antivirus plugin.
Still not sure of the exact cause of the problem though.

Disabling the Office plug-in works for us. Keep in mind
this is a workaround which compromises the protection.
Remember to re-enable when fix comes out.
Not true. Even Symantec admit there is no apparent loss of security or
protection - this is just an extra "value-added" level of protection
(altho the term "value-added" has been tested over the last couple of
days. Same with the email scanning option)

You know it makes sense.

See the reply from Ralph Malph (5 below your inquiry).
It's a Norton AntiVirus issue. As soon as people
downloaded the latest update from NAV, the Word and Excel
problems began.

Go into options of Norton Antivirus and disable any plug ins for Office.
