Word opens documents as "Read-only"

A user in one of my locations has this problem: She will
be working on documents, and things are fine, then all of
a sudden, the next day she'll open the same document, and
it will open as Read-Only, but there is no error box that
comes up stating this: the only way to see it is in the
Title Bar of Word. If you save it as something else, then
open it, it will be ok for a few days, then that one too
will be read-only. I checked the attributes of the files
on the server, and they are NOT set to read-only.

Now, I find out today that another user is having the
same issue, for most of last week.

Here are the specs:

Windows XP Professional, SP1
Office XP, latest service pack...
Files stored on Windows 2000 Server file server,
connected at 100MB.

Is there an issue with Windows XP/Windows 2000 Server???

Is it possible that the document is being used by more than one person on
the server at the same time? Does Word as the user if it would like to
create a local copy?

I'm having the same issue. Does anyone know what could be
causing this problem. We're running Win2K (sp4)
workstations, Office 2K and Win 2003 File Server.
Basically the exact problem as below. Every once in a
while, a user will open the document and it's read only
(nobody else has it open). They'll close the document and
re-open it and it's not read only anymore. The problem
doesn't happen consistently and it's not limited to a
single user. Most recently, we upgraded the File Server
to Win 2003... also, we added tighter ntfs security to
the folders that the documents are residing in, but the
users (that I've been dealing with) have full read and
write access.

There is no message prompting the user that the file is
read only.. you can only tell by looking at the title bar
(same problem as the user below posted).
