Word Paste Special not working since Office XP

With Windows 2000, I used to be able to create MS Word
drawings and use the Paste Special>Picture to paste them
into Word docs to save space. Ever since we were switched
to Office XP, this option doesn't work. Nothing appears
in the document. If fact, the only Paste Special option
that works is Paste Special>HTML Format. I also now have
these "Create Your Drawing Here" boxes appear when I try
to draw something, which didn't appear before XP. I have
already made sure my Tools>Options>View>Picture
Placeholders is unchecked (which I saw in another
message). Can anyone help?

Well, the "Create your drawing here" nonsense is the drawing canvas, which
you can disable on the General tab of Tools | Options. I don't know how that
might affect the operation of Paste Special.

Yes - I've disabled the drawing canvas and made sure that
the Picture Placeholders is unchecked.

Do you have a better way to create Word drawings (in
a .doc file) and then put them in another Word document
(hopefully saving some space)?
