word problem - solid black

OS: Windows XP
-I tried Spybot S&D and McAfee online virus checker
-I used the Detect and Repair menu tool but this did not fix the problem

with Word 2002:
-all documents are highlighted (solid/dark black) and cannot be
un-highlighted
-no text can be typed or added either
-i dont get any error popups

with Aim:
-aim constantly scrolls to the top of the conversation
(both the pre-existing conversation and where you type
your response, they both scroll to the top)

This could be a variation of the issue described in
