word program hangs

R

R Paul

i find lately that when i open a word document (word 2000) and then try to
view properties or change the page properties, etc. the title bar starts
blinking on and off again- blue / grey / blue / grey/ etc. The program hangs
and I can no longer do anything except shut down the program and try again.
The file I am trying to access and modify is in a folder on my desktop, it
is only 51 KB, and yet this happens again and again. It never happed before
a few weeks ago. My computer has enough RAM, I believe, to allow several
programs to operate at the same time, but I have only Word open when this
occurs.

Any ideas?

Are you using Norton Anti Virus? Open NAV and disable the Office Plug-in
under options.

I have got a similar problem, though Word doesn't hang and recovers
quickly to a normal state. If I open a file and then immediately do
Edit/find or file/print, then all that happens is that the Word bar in
the task bar at the bottom of the screen starts flashing on and off. If
I click on this flashing bar then the dialogue box (for find or print)
appears on the screen on its own, but now the document screen itself is
not visible. If I again click on the Word bar, then the document is
visible again, but the dialogue box, while visible, doesn't work, except
that I can close it. When I close it, all is well! If I now repeat
Edit/find (etc.) they work fine.

There are other things that don't work immediately after opening a
document (any document). For example, the button for "next page" at the
bottom of the right-hand vertical scroll bar has no effect whatever (nor
does the little button above it with the circle). Another thing I notice
is that when the document opens, the cursor (i.e. the text cursor which
indicates the typing position) is missing, and I have to click in the
document to make it appear.

I was having this problem in Word2000 every time I opened a document,
but after upgrading to Word2002 I find that I now get it perhaps 50% of
the time. I think I get it more when opening a document by
double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer, and less if I open it from
within Word.

And yes, I am using Norton Anti Virus. And yes, there was a time (4
months ago) when I didn't have this problem, which could correspond with
the time when I started using Norton (although I can't be exactly sure
of this). So I will try your suggestion about disabling the Office
Plug-in.
