word prompts to save

Hi all,

I am using windows xp home sr2 and office 2000. When I open a word file to
read when I go to exit word asks if I want to save changes. I didn't make
any changes to the file. Is this normal? If not is their a setting that
needs to be changed? any help would be much appreciated. thanks,

If this is happening for all documents, then no, it isn't normal. This is
usually a third party add-in of which Adobe and Symantec are about the
biggest (but not only) offenders. Try testing in Safe Mode and if it doesn't
happen, then check for add-ins.

From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Test again.

Hi Terry,

I did as you suggested. I started word in safe mode. I didn't have the
save problem. The only add-ins that I could find were one called swift.dot
which I installed myself. Another was called html.wwl I don't know anything
about that one. I disabled the swift add-in but, I still had the problem.
could it be a template that I created? Any more help would be most
appreciated. thanks, d

I suggest that temporarily, you remove the files from the Word Startup
folder and see if that eliminates the problem. It may possibly be a
normal.dot problem as that is also bypassed when you start in Safe mode: try
remaining it as normal.bad and test again. html.wwl is a completely new one
to me. WWL is definitely a word add-in extension, but I have never come
across this one.

Hi Terry,

I did as you suggested. I found three copies of normal.dot and re-named
them to normal.bad. But, the problem is still their.

Hi Terry,

The only file in that folder is the swift.dot file. I removed it but, the
problem is still their.

Hi Terry,

I noticed that when I open a template like blank document or a template I
created I don't get asked to save the file. that is when I don't make any
changes to the file. I hope this helps.

That particular article refers to Smart Tags, which I believe were
introduced in Word 2002, so they're probably not relevant to Word 2000.
Sorry.
