Word puts black stripe over what I type can't see

I just installed the OfficeXP for educator on my home
computer. When I try to use Word to type, I get this black
strip that covers what I am typing. If I change the view,
it momentarily shows the text I have typed, but as soon as
I click and begin to type again, it all goes blac and I
can't see what I am doing.
I have windows 98 pentium 3 if that matters

Word requires video settings of at least 800 x 600 and at least 256
colors.

If there were any intelligent life in Redmond, Word would test for its
requirements when it was opened, and put up a polite message if the
user had his or her system set to some other configuration.
