If my daughter was saving directly to a flash pen from her laptop does either

For the most part, no. It's possible that a temp file or two could remain on
the local drive but it's rare to find the complete file.

I'm guessing that a file has been lost or is corrupt? Ideally you should
work off of the local drive and after the document is saved and closed copy
it to the USB drive. Otherwise you can encounter document corruption.
