Word requires Power User in XP for Spell Check?

I posted this in the WinXP Pro group, they suggested
posting it here:

We replaced 25 old computers on our domain with new ones.
The new clients run XP Pro. We have Office 97
Professional on these.

We can only get the spell checker to work if the users are
put in as Power Users. Why would that be?
