Word scanning for virus when started -- won't open docs

My Word software suddenly will not open documents. I see the message at
bottom of page saying "Scanning for virus." The program is completely hung up
at this time and will not close. I have to go into task manager and end the
task to make Word shut down.

I did have a virus, the Blaster worm, but that has been deleted and my
computer (other than Word) runs fine now. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
Word (and the entire Office suite) to no avail.

I'm very frustrated! Any solutions out there?

Reinstalling Word rarely resolves any issues as templates, customizations
and registry entries are unchanged.

Are you able to start Word in Safe Mode: from Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. This starts Word in its native install mode bypassing
everything else. If it starts now, see

I should have added...

If you are using Norton AntiVirus, go into Norton and disable the Office
Plugin.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to go into Norton and do this, but then Norton
wouldn't open or reinstall. Sigh. Had to give in and do Disk Recovery. Now
computer and Word both work, but for future reference, how do I disable the
Office Plugin? I looked at Norton, but couldn't see how to do it.
