Is there a keystroke combination (or macro, or any other means) that I could
use to advance through and select each separate successive word in a Word
document? For example in the phrase "We went home," I would press a keystroke
combination and the entire word "We" would automatically be selected,
pressing the keystroke combination again would advance to and select the
entire word "went" and so on.

Click at the beginning of the selection area, hold down the Control and Shift
keys, and press the RightArrow key repeatedly to select successive words.
