Word shuts down 10 sec. after opening!

It's driving me crazy!

I saw a Washington Post article online about MS releasing a new and
important security update.

I run Windows XP Home on my laptop and desktop.

Laptop is running Office 2000 premium edition. Desktop is running Office
2003.

I diligently went to the link in the Washington Post article and installed
the update.

Since then, on both the machines, Word behaves like this:

1. it starts.

2. does a whole drama of "Requesting virus scan" and "Running virus scan"
(this is if I click directly on a Word Document to open it)

3. Having opened, it kind of stays on for approximately 10 seconds (I
actually timed it!!!)

4. Then it says: "Mircrosoft Office Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The information you were
working on might be lost. Microsoft Office Word can try to recover it for
you."

5. A tik-box is automatically selected by default and says next to it:
"Recover my work and restart Microsoft Office Word

6. It goes on to say: "Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have
created an error report tha tyou can send to help us improve Microsoft Office
Word. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous."

7. Then there are two links: "what data does this error report contain?"
and "Why should I report to Microsoft?"

8. Then there are two buttons; "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send".

9. Selecting Send Error Report results in a small drama of sending such a
report, but I never get to see the "Report sent" kind of message. Word and
the error reporting window both shut down, and Word re-starts, only to repeat
the drama over. Meanwhile, it also takes me to:

10. Step 9 repeats indefinitely, each time opening an IE window linking to
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=604 until I intervene and close
Word (clicking on the dismiss window X on the top right).

11. If I choose Don't Send, it just shuts down.

The http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=604 link says updates are
available ... etc. i have already downloaded and installed some sort of
office update. But the problem continues.

**and I have to go on international travel, lugging my laptop for use while
traveling... leaving in less than 36 hours (it is now 0821 Indian Standard
Time)... and Word is gone haywire***
