Word start up error

Hi, I'm assiting a friend who 'lost' her copy of word.

I removed and installed Office 2000 (have tried PRO and
Standard - both legit. with keys etc. etc.). Once
installed when I attempt to run the application I get the
following error:

'This application must be installed to run. Please run
setup from the location where you originally installed the
application.'

Th application is installed because I can see winword.exe
in c:\program files\office

The O/S is Windows ME

Please help.
