Word Start-Up Folder Empty

S

Steve

Word started out opening slowly and then would not open at all.
I found the following link:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

It suggest running word from 'start' 'run' 'windword.exe /a' to see if it a
corrupted template file. This works Word opens in a flash. This link then
says
you need to repair your 'start-up' path. My 'start up' folder is empty and
when I run Office 2000 repair it doesn't put anything into the start up
folder.

Also I 'searched' for a 'Normal.dot' and there isn't one.

I am already over my head trying to follow the inst. in the link above. I
would appreciate any and all help.

Thank you

By default your startup folders will be empty. It can be used to
supply global macros, toolbars, AutoText, etc to Word and is often
used by third parties to integrate their software.

I don't recall the article indicating you need to 'repair' your
Startup path. I believe it is 'check' your Startup path for templates
and if you find any move them out of the folder to prevent them from
loading when Word starts. So if your Startup folder is empty you're
okay on this check. :)

You should have a Normal.dot if you are having difficulty finding it
then use the following steps:

- Start Word using the /a switch
- Go to Tools/Options/File Locations
- Select "User Templates" and click "Modify

In the Modify dialog, you should see the path to your User Templates
folder in the Folder Name text box.

- Make sure the full path is selected and press Ctrl + C to copy it.
- Press the WinKey + E to open an Exploring Window
(the WinKey is the one with the Windows logo)
- Right-click in the Address bar and select Paste
- Press Enter to navigate to your User Templates folder

This is where Normal.dot should be located.
- Do not close the Exploring window
- Return to Word, close the dialog boxes and exit the application

Now you should be able to rename Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot.

If Word still doesn't start then post back and we'll provide detailed
instructions for the next troubleshooting step. :)

Beth,

Followed your instructions...Problem Solved. It was one of your postings I
got the first link from, but I probably did not follow it correctly. Your
emailed inst. were concise, detailed and excellent.

I continue to be amazed at the knowledge Microsoft employees have, but I
quess that is what you do. Anyway before I start an email debate, count me
as very happy and using Word again.
