word stops responding when inserting a picture

Usual reasons are corrupted registry entries or a corrupted normal.dot. Try
the steps shown here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQS/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Note that despite the fact that this is named "Problems Opening Word," it's
really much broader than that. Some of the same issues that can prevent Word
from opening properly can cause other problems as well, such as what you're
seeing.

If this doesn't give you a solution, what version of Word are you using?

Another thing to try. Hold down the Ctrl key as you're starting Word, say
Yes when prompted to start in Safe Mode. In a blank new document, try to
insert a picture. Does Word still freeze?

Does this happen with all pictures, or just pictures of a particular type?
Is this clipart, a jpg, bmp, tif... or what? Does it happen with all
documents, or just with a particular document?

Thanks so much for your help. It happens with any document and it happened in safe mode as well. It is with all picture types as well.

The next thing I would try is Help - Detect and Repair, assuming you haven't
already tried that.

Try deleting and reinstalling the printer driver (after making sure that you
have the latest version).
