Word stops responding when trying to open subdirectory

Word and outlook (XP Version) stop responding when trying to open a file in a
subdirectory. FIles in root(My Documents) directory are accessible. FIles
can be opened by going into directory in explorer and doubleclicking.
Behavior started about 1 week ago.
