Word Stops Responding with Bullets and Numbering

Windows XP with Office 2002 and latest updates.

Everytime that I try to use, or edit "outline" Bullets
and Numbering the program stops responding.

I can format several lines to use simple numbering, but
the results are unexpected as text randomly jumps
throughout the document.

I've tried to repair the installation, uninstall and
reinstall, and tried to create new documents with no
change in this problem.

Please advise.

This could be due to some minor corruption in the Registry. Exit Word
in the Registry drill down to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\List Gallery
Presets

And delete the List Gallery Presets key. This key will be recreated
upon restarting Word.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may also want to use the Registry/Export
Registry file command and export your selected branch and then delete
it instead of renaming. That way if you find the change wasn't
necessary or incorrect you can merge the deleted branch back to the
Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.
