Word table: how to make cell backgrounds different colors?

Word 2002
I am trying to create a table template in order to try out different fonts,
sizes and colors against different colored backgrounds. When I use the
background fill tool, it fills the entire page withe the same color or
texture, rather than the one cell I choose. I know there must be some way to
do it, but I can't figure it out. Please help me if you can!

Go to View/Toolbars and turn on the Tables and Borders toolbar. Are
you using the Shading color on this toolbar or are you using
Format/Background? If the latter then yes, this for the entire page
background. The former is for table cells.
