Word to Mac

PC is W98se with Office2K. My wife created a document and sent it to a
Mac user. The document contained fraction characters as a result of
Word converting particular 3-character sequences (number, slash,
number). The Mac user could not see or print them. I had my wife pull up
the doc, select each of the generated characters and re-type the 3-char
sequence which apparently suppresses the generation of the special
character. Is there a better way? Is something lacking on the Mac end?

Well it is a MAC! You just need to turn off the Fraction as Fraction
Characters under AutoFormat and AutoFormat as You Type. If you need to
revert other documents, use Find & Replace to find ½ and replace with 1/2,
etc.
