Word to WordPad

All my ms word files have converted to Wordpad files /
icons - how has this happened and do I nrrd to take any
action

Apologies if I have double posted this one !!!

Reregister Word by going to Start, Run and typing in

winword /r

and press enter. Nothing will appear to happen but Windows will have
registered Word.
