Word unexpectedly quits

Hello. I was wondering if anyone can help me with this
problem: a few days ago I upgraded my Word program and ever
since I haven't been able to use any word document. As
soon as the screen comes up, a message follows that says
that it has unexpectedly quit, and everything vanishes! I
have a mac and I'm pretty much lost, so any help would be
grately appreciated.
