Word v.X: What I See Is NOT What I Get

N

I am working on a document and I eventually become aware that the
cursor is misaligned with the lines in the text that I have already
written. If I try to edit something, I see that the cursor is not
really where it appears to be in relation to the text on the page. It
seems that editing is happening with respect to one origin and the text
is displayed with respect to another origin. Then when I make changes,
the changes are displayed in relation to the editing origin, but
anything I have not changed remains displayed in relation to the
original origin. I have tried my best to work despite this, but it is
very annoying and it keeps happening.

I have looked for a 'refresh' command somewhere but I cannot find
anything that works. I have tried minimizing the window and bringing it
back. If I move it so that part of it is outside the borders of the
screen , this seems to sometimes change the editing origin (but not
back to where it belongs). It seems that maybe resizing the window has
some effect as well. I think the problem may be triggered when I switch
between applications.

This is clearly a bug, but I can't seem to find any updates for Word
v.X, except for the security updates. Are there really no bug fixes
released for Word v.X?

Thanks for any help!

If you are using Postscript type 1 fonts and a very unpatched Office
and a very old Mac OS X then look a little harder for the updates.

What you describe are the symptoms of unadorned out-of-the-box Office
and Mac OS X 10.2.something small

Even if it says 'security' apply it.
when you are finished 'About Word' should say 'service release 1'
and the Finder should say version 10.1.6 (040913)
