Word Variables

Does anyone know of a way to input programming-like "variables" into Word?
For example, can I place a variable x in a page in some document, then adjust
x's value, and it will update all variables x in that document? It would
really be useful.

From the FAQ

19. How can I enter something once in a document and have it repeat
elsewhere?

Check out - ActiveDocument.Variables
I use a variable to see "who" has opened the document, Time/Date stamp etc.
