Word very slow to open

I am using office 2000 with all of the updates, my OS is Windows XP SP2.
When I double click on a word.doc file it take about a minute to open,
it used to take 10 seconds max.
Opening word from the start menu is still quick.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?
