word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt.

My friend uses Word 2003. I use Word 2000. He emailed me a Word document that he created, and asked me to make a few changes, and email it back to him. I made the changes, saved the file, and sent it back to him. But when he tries to open it, he gets this message

"Word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt
Try one or more of the following...........

Please explain why it is doing this, and what is the workaround. Thank you

this is a known problem for Office 2003, openig documents
in done in Office 2000h
