Hi

I've read the other threads on this subject, and I have applied the patches for Word 2003 but we are still experiencing the same problem as before the update. It's only on certain attachments (I guess dependant on version type).

Have you any other suggestions so that we can try in order to be able to open them?

Regards

Hi

Yes having the sender save the DOC as an RTF, then emailing will allow me to open the attachment, thanks. The article you refer to offers a reason and a work around, but this is certainly not a solution to the problem.

I work in the Recruitment Business, and we receive in the region of 50 - 100 cv's a day through email (mostly DOC attachments). It isn't practical or professional if we have to email the people who's cv attachment will not open due to this bug, and ask them to resend as an RTF.

This is not directed at you personally, but having spent thousands of pounds on Office 2003, I can't believe what would appear to be such a fundamental flaw in the product hasn't been resolved.

Is there likely to be a permanent fix very soon, not just a work around?

Regards

If you read the article carefully, you will have seen that this is not a
Microsoft problem; it is a problem with mail servers. I have been exchanging
attached Word files with a client for years, and I have never sent or
received one that could not be opened.

All I can say is that I'm using Word 2003 and haven't noticed any problems.

I see, so it's down to the programmers of the mail servers to fix the problem then?
I shall contact mine and I will let you know their response.

As for the part of your email that refers to exchanging attached word
files for years. We also have been exchanging word files for years without
problems until recently installing Office 2003, when that all changed (using
the same mail server as before!).

I'd say you are encountering the problem described in the article - which is the reason I zip all of my documents btw. :)

But just in case, here are a couple of things to try.

Did you try saving the attachment to your local drive, starting Word and then going to File/Open and opening the file? If you don't encounter the error then I'd say your file associations are corrupt.

To recreate them go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

If the error still occurs then did you try using the "Open and Repair" command found under the Open drop down in the Open dialog box?
