Word was unable to read this document

We are testing Office 2003 and while doing so we have
encountered an issue where, when opening certain word
documents, we will encounter an error that reads "Word was
unable to read this document. It may be corrupt."
Following along with the suggested work around, instead of
opening it directly, I open it from the open dialog and
choose open and repair from the drop down. The results of
this present me with a pop up dialog displaying two errors
in the document: Internal Data Integrity (Type 4)1 and
Internal Data Integrity (Type 4)2. Clicking ok to this
message closes it and I can then save the document and go
about my business. There is also a hot fix for this issue
that I found, 828041. It is downloadable as a single file
and can also be had by doing office updates. Incidentally
I had the patch applied before I started looking into this
issue so I can safely say that it does not resolve the
problem. What I would like is some information on the root
cause of this issue and a general fix that will prevent
the user population from encountering it.
