Word? Which one?

I am a user of WordPerfect 11. O, and WindowsXP. I need to submit an
article manuscript to a journal in Word format. I used a function of WP to
save a copy as a doc. file. But not owning Word, I can't check the saved
file to see if I lost any formatting or anything else in the conversion. I
assume I need to get and load a copy of Word. Can I simply buy Word
separate from a Suite of programs? Would it matter what version I got?

Hi Jerry

Yes, you can just buy Word separately from the other programs in the various
Office suites. More information here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/default.mspx

However, for your purposes you might be able to make use of either

- a free 30-day trial of Word 2003 available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx

- the free Word Viewer from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en
The Word Viewer lets you view, but not edit, Word documents. It won't stop
working in 30 days like the trial will.

Hope this helps.

I can't seem to find just plain Word on the suggested sites. However, there
seem to be many Microsoft Works Suite 2006 for sale on ebay for under $40.
They are all advertised as factory sealed, new, unopened, unregistered. Is
there any reason not to buy one of these?

It is probably OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions of the
software that is only licensed by Microsoft to be sold as part of a hardware
package. To use the software on a machine other than the machine with which
it is sold would be in contravention of the End User Licence Agreement.

Microsoft do not provide support for such versions of the software. The
deal underwhich they provide it to the OEM is that the OEM will provide the
support.

Such software should not be being offered for sale on ebay. If you were to
buy such software on ebay, it would not be supported.

Caveat emptor.

It helps--and doesn't. All I need is Word, to make sure that formatting etc
remain intact when I convert an occasional WPerfect file to Word for a few
publishers. I don't need an entire Office Suite package; so I'm looking for
just Word. And I can't seem to locate that. Does it exist on its own?

It is available, but not often sold, because Works Suite (which includes
Word) usually retails for less than Word alone. You might want to check out
prices for Works Suite.

I hope people aren't too bored by this thread. I guess I need more than the
free Word viewer in case I find some problem with the formatting of my
converted WP file. I saw a package on the Microsoft page, Works Suite 2006,
for $100. And actually I believe it's at Staples for $90 and there is even
a rebate.

According to the Microsoft site Works Suite 2006 includes Word 2002, Works
8, Money 2006, Digital Image....2006, Encarte, and Streets....2006. And the
front of the box has a picture for each program. I took the box to check
out and just to assure myself I said to the sales person, 'this has Word,
right?' And he said, yes but it is only a 90 day trial. I couldn't find a
single mention on the box or on the web site about a trial period. What am
I missing, here?

And if Word 2002 is in fact there would it let me either convert a document
from WP11or read and edit a document I saved in my WP program as an MS Word
2002 document?
