Word will not open a doc Clicked in Windows Explore

I have asked this question before and received a suggestion, but it did not
solve the problem so I will try again.

Word works normally when it is open and a document opened from it's own file
menu. But If a Document is clicked on in Windows Explorer several different
errors may occur. Error 1. "Word cannot open (Non-existent path here)". When
the OK button is pressed the dialog may re-occur several times with
differing non-existent paths specified. Eventually, the clicked document may
open. Error 2. Word opens with no document open, just an empty word window.
Error number 3. "Windows cannot find (Correct Document Path Here). Make sure
you have typed the name correctly". When OK is clicked Word opens without a
document open. These errors happen in no particular order, but Error two is
most frequent. This also happens when I right click on any file that Word
can open, and click on the Open With Word menu.

A document can be dragged to the open empty word window and the document
opens. This is on a Win XP Home machine using Office 2000. All other Office
programs( Excel, Access) behave correctly. I have tried Office repair and
re-associating file extensions without success. It must be a registry key
that is fouled up, but I do not know which one or the corrective action to
be taken. The MS Knowledge Base does not seem to have an article that
addresses this problem. Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

TIA
