WORD will not open

This morning, when I treid to launch WORD, I received an erroe message
saying "WORD has encountered an error an needs to shut down"
I tried uninstalling WORD , then re-installing, but it still would not launch.
I then uninstalled Office and re-installed from the CD. Still no success.
Other Office components such as Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook seem to run
without any difficulty.
Any ideas on why I now have this problem and what I can do.

Seriously, the exact same thing happened to me!! Ever since I downloaded a
trial version of Microsoft Office 2003, which automatically deleted some of
my Word files upon its installation!! I have been completely unsuccessful at
fixing my Word 2002 issues! The error message that I continue to receive
says, "Patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
I've done everything KnowledgeBase and various tech supports have
suggested, and still no resolution. I sure hope someone can help! I used
Microsoft Word 2002 constantly, and I feel lost without it.

The error message that you see is "Patch package could not be
opened". The error message that the original poster sees is
"Word has encountered an error and needs to shut down".
Seriously, on what planet could these two vastly different error
messages be interpreted as "the exact same thing happened to me"?
