Word will not open

I have Office 2000 working on XP. After working for years, just recently I
can not open word documents. Has this happened to anyone else and what was
the solution.

I am not getting an error message, it just will not fully open. I get a
white screen with the words Microsoft Word at the top left and nothing else.
I have left it for 15 minutes but the timer just stays on screen and the
screen does not change.

When I try to open Word, either an existing document or from the programs
menu it just hangs without opening fully.

I visited the site you suggested. It was helpful but the problem persists:
Using "winword.exe /a" opens MS Word.
I can not find a "Normal.dot" file even using the search function.
The only file in my start-up folder is "Palmopp.dot" Moving this made no
difference.
Renaming this file as "palmopp.old" made no difference.

Following the instructions in the link you gave me I am now in the registry.
I now have another problem. How do i find out if I have Word version 8.0;
9.0 or 12.0 which are the versions in the registry given that I can't open
it? My version of Word came with an Office 2000 package.

Since using winword.exe /a opens Word, I suspect you most likely have a
damaged normal.dot template, or possibly a damaged Word data key. Yes,
you most definitely have a normal.dot template... use Windows Explorer
or My Computer to search for it (be sure to include hidden and system
files and folders in the search options). The default location for this
file is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates, although it may be different in your case
depending on what options you chose when you installed Office.

Word 2000 is version 9.0 If you have a 12.0 folder, then that tells me
you've been dabbling with Office 2007.
