word won't allow me to insert characters or a word. it backs up

I have word XP home addition. When I try to insert a word or letter, it
backs up instead of allowing me to complete the task.

Please help...thanks

Backs up or types over existing text? If the latter, press the Insert key
once.

I don't know what you mean by "it backs up". Can you describe exactly what
is happening, perhaps using different words, since "it backs up" can mean a
variety of things, none of which seem plausible in this context.

A wild guess might be that overtype is turned on (if it is, the letters OVR
will appear on the status bar at the bottom of Word's window). If overtype
is on, double-click the OVR on the status bar to turn it off and see if you
now get the desired/expected outcome.
