Re Word 97 ---

PROBLEM: When I go to Format/Bullets&Numbering and choose Bullets (round
dots), I get what looks like profile images of a scanner with lid partly
open instead of Bullets. I can't get the Bullets. Help please!

BACKGROUND:

Old WinX pc crashing so got New WinX pc.

Installed Windows Office Pro 97 (what I had on Old pc) on New pc.
Installed Ofc 97 SR-2 patch (what I had on Old pc) on New pc.

Wanted to save Word templates of course, so copied-pasted from Old pc.

What happens when you click on Format, Bullets and Numbering and select any
of the types of bullets shown then click Customize and select the round
bullet? (I think this is available on 97, even though I am not looking at a
computer with that version of Office on it currently.)

Same results.
FYI, all choices work normally except the round bullets and the diamond
bullets -- each of them produce something screwy.

OK, when you click Customize then click on the round bullet then click on
Font it should show Symbol as the font type. If not then it needs to be
changed to Symbol or SymbolPS. When you close that window and click on
Character it should show the round bullet. Let me know the status for the
Font and the Character windows.

Ahh -- I see how this works now. And I can solve the issue, but not with
"Symbol" per se. Word shows Symbol as the font it's picking, but there is
no Symbol font apparently -- see:

I don't have the option of simply Symbol or SymbolPS; I do have Open Symbol,
but that doesn't give me the round dot for the round dot setting in Bullets
& Numbers.

I am missing "Symbol" for some reason. Maybe it's because I copied some
MSCREATE.DIR directories from the Old pc to the New pc. I wonder if that
messed up anything?

When I go to Control Panel/Fonts, I see that two symbol fonts are installed.
One is a truetype, and the other is SYMBOLE.FON and has an attribute of HA,
whatever that means.

OK, when you go to Windows, Fonts (and you may have to turn on ability to
see system files) you may see Symbol.fon and/or Symbol.ttf as well as
Symbolps.ttf. The Symbol.fon file is a raster font which will only give
limited sizes of bullets where the .ttfs will give infinite (pretty much)
sizes of bullets. Hope you can find them and get everything up and running
OK. Glad to help and let us know the outcome.
