Word won't open - "1033" folder problem

I am running Word 2002, and recently when I tried to open it, the comp began
to run Word 2002 setup and stopped with this error message: "Error 1317.
Setup cannot create the folder c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Office10\1033. Verify that the path exists in your system and that you
have sufficient permissions to update it."
When I try to open this folder in Windows Explorer, it says that the folder
is "not accessible" and that it is "corrupt and unreadable".
Other Office programs like Picture It work fine, but even when I try to
install or uninstall from the Works Suite CD it doesn't work.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I tried to do what that article said, but I can't click on the Security tab
for the folder because there isn't one, even after following the directions
at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308419 and turning
off simple file sharing. All other folders have Security tabs, but not this
one. So I can't change the permissions on this folder.

Any other ideas?

Are you logged in as Administrator?

Yes, I am logged in as the Administrator. The problem seems to be that the
folder is "corrupt and unreadable", not that I don't have permission to
create it.
Any idea how to fix this?

Make a full backup of your hard drive, then run the chkdsk /f utility as
described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=176646 "Error Message: The
File or Directory Is Corrupt...".
