Word won't open

Try to open Word- error msg- Winword failed to initialize (OXC0000006)
Ran Norton, Spypot, Lava Adware without benefit.
Removed Office 2000 with plan to reinstall but then get error msg Setup.exe failed to initialize (OXC000006)

Reinstalling is usually a complete waste of time because uninstalling does
not remove add-ins, custom templates, normal.dot, registry settings or COM
