word wont open

Msg. Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I get this message whether I use the MSOffice tool bar
icon, the start/programs icon or from winexplorer
I/office/winword.exe. (office is on logical HD I) Can open
with run "Winword.exe /a"

Was refered to
http\\word.mvp.org......probsopeningword.htm.

Faithfully went through troubleshooting with no
improvements.
I removed 2 extra normal.dots, renamed remaining
normal.dot to ...old. Found MScreate.dir in word startup
path and moved it to a temp folder. I have no network
print driver nor antivirus progs.

This was all that was stated in the troubleshooting. I
still have the same problem which was initially
intermittent and is now continual.

Prior to troubleshooting with instructions I removed all
office components and reinstalled all of office.

Help please.

When I tried to apply service pack 2 it told me I had to
do SP 1 first. When I tried to install that, the system
told me it couldn't do it (no apparent reason). Could be
that this office 97 patch won't work with xp.

What next?

Of course an Office 97 patch won't work with XP! Get the Service Packs for
XP.
