Word wont open

I am using XP Home upgraded from 98SE. Word was fine
last week. (Don't use it much). Just tried to open word
and I get message "Microsoft Word encountered a problem
and needs to close" Then it just shuts down. Can anyone
suggest how to find the problem.

The problem usually is corruption either in normal.dot or in the registry.

We are having the same problem that began today. We can't
figure it out either. I guess we will keep looking for a
