Word won't save document.

Peter Shippen

Just upgraded to Windows 2000 from NT. Also, re-installed
Office 2000. Now, I cannot save anything in word (excel
access is fine).
The problem is very similar to the following article:

Article 174162
WD97: Windows NT 4.0: "Saving the AutoRecovery File Is
Postponed"

Either by using CTRL-S or the Save As function nothing
happens. I'm am running all the necessary Service Packs
and security patches. All the file systems are NTFS and I
don't want to partition my HD.

Any suggestions?

Please Help.

Are you using Norton AV? Which version?

It is unlikely to be VS (though note the v4.5 was updated to v7 about 6
months ago).

Assuming that you didn't reformat your drive when you upgraded, I'd guess
that something that ran happily in NT is incompatible with Win2K. Check Word
for any add-ins or Macros that may have been installed by some third party
application or utility. Typically you may find a third party macro that is
incepting Word's AutoSave Macro.

Try a test: start Word from the Start, Run dialog using the /a switch. Type
in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in its default install mode bypassing
normal.dot or any add-ins, macros or custom templates. Try saving a
document. Does that work?

If you need more help, please let us know if this is a standalone PC or
networked and any details of the network & server please.

Terry,
am running McAfee Viruscan V4.5.0.534.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks Terry, this allows me to work normally while I try
to identify the macro.
Thanks so much.

Terry,

I have a similar problem. In my case it involves documents in Word 2000 SR1
on a Windows XP machine. I tried your temporary fix and it does work. My
questionis how one removes Add Ins? I know more or less how to get rid of
Macros. At least I think I do. When you go to the Macros menu there is a
submenu for the Macros Organizer, and you can delete macros there. I have a
program, Reference Manager 10, that I suspect to be the culprit. It inserts
itself into one of the menus. Do I have to delete this program to test for
interference? For that matter, would deleting this program end such
potential interference or would I also have to reinstall Word?
