Word Won't Save

Yesterday morning, Word was working properly. When I did a shut down, that
icon was there saying that an "update" was being made.

When I reopened my computer, I found that Word will no longer open a file
using the File-Open command. If I double-click to get one, I can't save the
file. The program crashes. "Program not responding is the message."

I tried the "Detect and Repair" on the help menu. It didn't work. All
other programs are working properly and do save files. I ran Norton; there
is no virus.

Will I be able to remove Word and reinstall it without having a problem? I
worry about the copyright thing. Is there something else you can suggest?

You probably have the KB908531 problem. Remove that security update and
the problem will go away. Instructions were posted in this newsgroup on
Friday. You should not have to actually do anything to word, the update
is corrupting certain functions in Windows itself which in turn is
hitting IE and all Microsoft Office applications (and some others as well).

[Your symptom is slightly different from the most "classical" symptoms
for this problem, so it could be somehting else, but I suspect it's
another manifestation of the KB908531 problem.]

I hope they let us know when the problem is solved. I've turned off
automatic updates, for when I removed KB908531, it was replaced and I had to
remove it again. - Pat

Pat,

Despite what some people have suggested here, removing the patch is not
the solution. You need a permanent solution and this new kb from
Microsoft does exactly that:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

Hope it solves your problems. If you don't understand anything in that
kb please ask again.

Regards,
