Word won't show my drawings

I have created several simple drawings inside of Word, using lines and basic
shapes. Now, Word will no longer display these drawings, but displays a big
blank square instead. They print fine, but won't display on the screen.
Opening the document on other computers gives the same results, so it isn't
just this one computer or local Word settings. What would cause this, and
how can I get Word to display my drawings again?
