Word wrongly assigns a style to level 8, I can't make it stop!

Usually I can work through my number problems, but this one has me stumped.
I made some new styles, based on my Body Text style, to use on a new outline
list. Then I made the new outline list and assigned the four new styles to
levels 1-4. As soon as I accepted the change, Word took the style I had
associated with level one and moved it to level 8. I went back and changed
it back to level one, Word made it level 8 again. I assigned a different
style to level 8 and put my style back at 1. Word ignored this and kept my
intended level 1 style at level 8.

That was this morning.

Since then I have made a new normal template and tried the whole thing over.
Same results.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Naturally, as soon as I sent this I found the answer...some how my "Normal"
style had been changed to Paragraph "Level 8" and that propagated through
Body Text and to my new style. That was all it took for that style to get
reassigned to level 8 everytime I closed the outline customize window. Live
and learn.
