The Find feature in Word X (with Service Release 1, and up to version
10.1.4 via Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.5 Update) (OS 10.3.4) is driving
me mad.

With Word 98 the "Find" palette/dialogue box used to float above the
document so that you could find whatever it was you wanted, go across
to the document to make a change, if necessary, and then click on the
"Find Next" button immediately to go on to the next. The "Find What"
box would remain unchanged, so you could go straight to the next
occurrence of the search object.

With Word X, as soon as you edit the document the "Find"
palette/dialogue box disappears into the background so you have to use
"Command-F" to bring it back up again. Not only that, but the "Find
What" box usually insists on going back to whatever you were searching
for two or three searches before the current one, so at each
occurrence, you have to use the arrows at the side of the box to
restore your current search object. If you're doing a whole string of
searches, it's infuriating!

I've checked through all the preferences and customize options I can
find, with no luck. Does anyone have any bright ideas?

P.S. Hope it's fixed in Office 2004 - my copy of the Professional
Edition should be shipped soon!

You could try clicking the double down arrow on the vertical scroll bar for
Find Next instead of using the dialog box, if I understand what you are
doing. (Those double arrows on the vertical scroll bar go to Next Browse
Object, Previous Browse Object, and you can set the Browse Object by
clicking on the little round button between them. But when you run a Find,
the Browse Object automatically sets itself to match your Find. So first use
the box, then continue by using the arrows)

Depending on your screen setup, you can perhaps move the Find dialog so that
it is not entirely hidden by your document.

Also, I wonder if it is the repeat of cmd-F that is adjusting the Find
term....

After using the Find box the first time, use CMD-Page Down to Find
again, or CMD-Page Up to find the previous item. No need to open the
Find Box again.
