Word X spell check not working

Hi

I'm running OS 10.2.6 and Word X with the latest service pack and
spell check doesn't work. The preferences for Spelling are greyed
out... Why?

I checked spelling in Excel, this doesn't seem to work either, and I
couldn't even open up the Excel preferences dialog as the menu option
was greyed out...

Any clues please? It feels like a permissions problem...
