Word X unexpectedly quits on startup

I've just installed Word X, and whenever I try to start it up, it
unexpectedly quits when it's optimizing font performance during the
splash screen.

Any clues on where to start to fix this problem?

In addition to the tips listed there, check your Word Startup Folder
(Applications: Microsoft Office X: Office: Startup) and see whether you have
any add-ins there that may be conflicting with Word (Endnote is a common
culprit).

See especially the part re corrupt fonts.

posting back because nothing worked, be sure to explain what you already
tried.
