Word XP and File permission errors

Hello all...
Have been working on this problem for a while, and can not get it
fixed...

One user on a network of around 6 has the following error:

Sporadically in Word, when the user goes to save a document (which is
on the server), they get the error "The file is read only" and Word
will only let them save the file under a different filename.

After this, the temp file (~$word.doc) is created and is not deleted
when the document is shut down (this file appears in the directory of
the original document)

other temp files are created also (eg: ~WRL0216.tmp, ~WRD2849.tmp,
~WRL2860.tmp)
all of which can not be deleted until I restart the PC. (NOTE: not the
server)

Once the PC is restarted I can delete the ~$word.doc file, and all the
temp files, and everything is OK, until it all happenes again..

I have tried uninstalling Office, service packs, re-joining the
domain.

I have tried new NICs, new Switches, I have even rebuilt this PC twice
only to have the problem happen again......

I called dell see if it could be a hardware issue somewhere along the
lines, and as usual, they blame Word...

I am going to try today to change the NIC in the server, as maybe this
is the cause, buy why are the other 6 machines not having the same
problem, when they are all SOE?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thx

Running SBS 2000 with latest SPs....

The problem I am having is with around 4 PCs all the sme model, in 2
different offices.... So im not too sure if the server is the fault,
as they are not all connecting to the same server.

Thx

Is this with documents newly created by the user (that is the first ever
save) or always with documents they have opened from the server to edit?

Problem occurs with documents that are already on the server, the
users are just editing the docs...

Thanks,

Check to see if the server is running Windows 2000 Server with Servicepack 3
applied. It is SP3 that may be the problem.
