Word XP Crashes When Typing in Japanese

In the computing classroom where I work, we try to type
in Japanese in word xp it crashes. If you change the
language from English to Japanese, select Hiragana input
and as soon as you type, word stalls.

We're running Windows XP Professional and Office XP on a
Dell Optiplex GX260, which is a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4. All
the other languages work fine and Japanese worked fine
until a week ago.

Any suggestions or diagnoses?

You may get more knowledgeable responses if you post to
microsoft.public.word.international.features or to one of the Word NGs with
"jp" in the name.
