Word XP Crashing to Black Screen

I really hope someone can help me here. A client of mine
has a Compaq Presario 5000 with Windows ME. They are
running Office XP Standard. When they are using any of
the Office applications (but more Word), the program will
regularly and usually quickly, black out their screena nd
send their monitor into power save mode. This is only
happening in these Office applications and nothing else.
I have updated all their drivers and have updated Office
XP with every update available on office.microsoft.com. I
cannot find any information on this problem or what to do
about it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks all!

Start by turning off ALL power saving features both in Windows and in the
Computer BIOS. Also turn off the screen saver too and test the PC for some
time to see if that eliminates the problem.

If the problem continues, let us know with some information on whether this
is a standalone machine or on a network and what else may be running on the
computer.
