Word XP runs incredibly slow

Any time I do anything: change font, open a file, try to
open a file when another is already open, close the
program, etc. word runs in complete slow motion. It is
such a problem that I can barely use it. I have tried
uninstall, reinstall to no avail. I have all the updates
and nothing seems to help. No other programs in Office
XP have this problem, only word. Any suggestions?
